Product and Industry Standards

Photo of Agricultural Inspection.The Office of Product & Industry Standards (OPIS) is responsible for enforcing several different laws. Inspectors are responsible for the inspection of establishments and commodities covered by the five commodity laws assigned to OPIS. These include Fertilizer, Liming Materials, Seed, Feed, including medicated feed, and Animal Remedies Laws.

OPIS is also responsible for the inspection and testing of all commercially used weighing and measuring equipment as required under the Virginia Weights and Measures Law. Other activities include the inspection and verification of packaged consumer products, testing and inspecting gasoline dispensers, collecting samples of gasoline, and reporting findings on investigations of consumer complaints and emergency situations.

The Office of Product and Industry Standards operates three field offices and two laboratories in addition to its main office in Richmond.
