Ginseng Management

In order for ginseng harvested in Virginia to be eligible for export, several guidelines established by the U.S. Department of Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service, must be followed.

The requirements include a mandatory inspection, certification and licensing program and field research programs to gather population data. These are necessary since American ginseng is a category 2 species under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) Treaty.
