STATEMENT FROM DR. RICHARD WILKES, STATE VETERINARIAN, VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE AND CONSUMER SERVICES

Contact: Elaine J. Lidholm, 804.786.7686

On August 27, 2009, the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) issued a news release stating that a pony in Loudoun County with multiple medical problems had tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis.  In that release, we noted that the case was unusual.  On September 3, 2009, VDACS learned that follow-up testing on the horse was negative for EEE.  This reduces the total number of EEE positive horses this year from eight to seven.  We regret the error and have made corrections to our records and our Web site and have notified the horse owner that the animal did not test positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis.
