DEVILS BACKBONE BREWING COMPANY OPENS AS PART OF GREEN COMMUNITY IN NELSON COUNTY
Contact: Marion Horsley, 804.225.3820
Todd P. Haymore, Commissioner of the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS), announced today that the Devils Backbone Brewing Company has opened for business in Nelson County, Virginia. The Brewery represents a $3 million investment in the new green community of the Village at Glen Mary. The Village is sited at the based of the Blue Ridge Mountains near Wintergreen Resort and is an environmentally sensitive, pedestrian and community-friendly business development project. When operating fully, Devils Backbone will employ 35 fulltime employees.
“This new company has an extraordinary story,” said Commissioner Haymore. “Steve Crandall, the company founder, spent more than three years developing the brewery, utilizing the assistance of VDACS’ Agribusiness Development Services. After a two-year, worldwide search, he located a used top-of-the-line, German-engineered brewing system in Tokyo, Japan and had it shipped to Virginia to serve as the centerpiece of his new enterprise. A new chapter of the story begins today with the opening of this facility that is the flagship business at the Village at Glen Mary.”
The brewery will open with five craft brews. The company’s inaugural beers are Black Rock Oatmeal Stout, Wintergreen Wheat, 8 Point India Pale Ale, Spike and Ale O’ Fergus. The beer names compliment the local points of interest and environment.
The rustic post and beam construction of the 5,800 square foot facility boasts high ceilings, stone columns and fireplaces and an inviting copper bar overlooking the impressive copper brewing kettles. Visitors can take in views of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains and the Three Ridges Wilderness area.
“The Devils Backbone Brewing Company is a welcome addition to our already strong spirits business cluster,” said Nelson County Central District Supervisor Connie Brennan. “It is a perfect complement to our ten wineries and other brewery, attractions, accommodations and restaurants. Tourism is a major player in Nelson County’s economy and the Devils Backbone Brewing Company adds another destination for visitors to our Commonwealth.”
The Devils Backbone Brewing Company is located at 200 Mosbys Run in Roseland, Virginia at the base of Wintergreen Mountain, near the intersection of Routes 151 and 664. The smoke-free brewery and restaurant is open 7 days a week serving both lunch and dinner. Click here for additional information.
