DATES AND COLLECTION SITES ANNOUNCED FOR 2008 PESTICIDE DISPOSAL PROGRAM

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) and the Virginia Pesticide Control Board invite farmers, pesticide dealers, pest control firms, homeowners and golf courses to participate in the 2008 pesticide disposal program, which collects unwanted, outdated, or banned pesticides and disposes of them in a safe manner. VDACS, through its Office of Pesticide Services (OPS), provides this service at no cost to participants in the designated localities. The program is funded through pesticide product registration fees collected by OPS.
This year’s program will provide collection sites in the following areas: the Counties of Alleghany, Bland, Botetourt, Buchanan, Carroll, Craig, Dickenson, Floyd, Giles, Grayson, Lee, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski, Roanoke, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, Wise and Wythe; and the Cities of Bristol, Clifton Forge, Covington, Galax, Norton, Radford, Roanoke and Salem.
Participants will be required to transport their unwanted pesticides to central collection sites located within the service area. Only unwanted pesticides will be accepted. Other materials that have been contaminated with pesticides, for example, pesticide contaminated fertilizer, will not be accepted as part of the Pesticide Disposal Program.

The Pesticide Disposal Program is a cooperative program of the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, the Virginia Pesticide Control Board, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, Virginia Cooperative Extension and the Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services. Participants may register by contacting their local Extension agents or by calling VDACS’ Office of Pesticide Services at 804.371.8598, preferably at least two weeks prior to the collection in each area.
