The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services' Division of Marketing has an exciting career opportunity for a part-time Grain Inspector/Grader in the Grain Marketing Program. This position inspects and officially certifies grain product quality in accordance with USDA Standards of Grain for producers, shippers, processors, buyers, marketers, and other parties with a financial interest in the grain industry. The incumbent will perform sampling, weighing, stowage examination, grading and certification of domestic and export grain at export facilities in and around the Hampton Roads area. This position requires varied hours and the ability to work flexible schedules.
QUALIFICATIONS: Requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Must demonstrate a proven ability to communicate effectively (oral and written)with a diverse clientele, perform basic mathematical calculations, as well as a demonstrated ability to read, interpret, apply and explain complex rules and regulations. Knowledge and experience in agricultural commodities, preferably in grain production is desirable. Knowledge of FGIS Rules and Regulations for grain grading is preferred, but not required as training will be provided. Candidates must meet the required qualifications for a USDA/FGIS License for sampler, stowage examinations and weigher within 45 days of employment. This position is physically demanding and will require long periods of standing, walking, climbing/descending of up to 50 feet, reaching, and frequent bending/stooping. Inspections and grading functions involve visual and olfactory analysis, and therefore require a verifiable ability to distinguish colors and odors. The successful applicant will be required to maintain a valid Virginia Driver's License as well as a driving record that reflects a sense of responsibility for safety. Hiring salary: $12.50 per hour.
In accordance with State Code, incumbents of this position must complete a Statement of Economic Interests form upon hire and annually thereafter. A fingerprint-based criminal history check will be required for the finalist candidate.
This is an hourly position limited to 1500 hours per year and does not include State benefits.
