Animal Health and Welfare

Animal Welfare Program

Providing advisory assistance to localities in the operation and design of animal pounds and shelter facilities is a key component of the Division's Animal Welfare Program. Upon request, or complaint, staff members are available to review local facilities for compliance with applicable state laws and regulations concerning operations and advise localities of any corrective action needed.

In conjunction with local animal control officials, veterinarians and agricultural inspectors investigate reports of alleged animal cruelty and provide animal owners with advice on the proper care and handling of their animals.

Animal Welfare:

The Animal Record Summary System is currently open to accept animal record summaries for the calendar year 2012 from Virginia Animal Releasing Agencies.  The system will be open to accept entries until midnight January 31, 2013.

Animal Releasing Agencies will shortly be receiving a reminder letter containing their PIN required to access the system; this is the same PIN used in previous years so if you have it you may begin entering your report.  For this year’s prescribed format please see the following:
